Last weekend, I made a whirlwind trip to western Kansas to install “nAtuRal hisTory: the intersection of art and science” at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas. My work is on display with Danielle L Robinson, whose vision of water and the sea is imaginative and inspiring. We spent several years together in a cramped studio space in Graduate School, and I like to think that the similarities in our work reflect that! The exhibit runs from Sept 24 – Feb 24. Here are a few pictures from the installation…

I’m delighted to report that I’ve been working in the studio this summer after a busy, chaotic first year of teaching! In September, I’ll be installing much of my work for a 2 person show (with my former studio mate, Danielle Robinson) at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas. It does make sense! Our art is inspired by nature and the science behind it, and we’re excited to show that connection in a natural history museum.

So… here’s what I’ve been up to in the studio so far. To see the finished works… make plans to come to the Sternberg Museum (Sept 24-Feb 24)!

My ceramics work these days has revolved around this little house (and his brothers). After building them, I get to go back in and do the surfacing. I am pretty excited about this one, with the piercings creating variety in values. Eventually, they will grow up and look like these from the One Day series. [...]]]>

My ceramics work these days has revolved around this little house (and his brothers). After building them, I get to go back in and do the surfacing. I am pretty excited about this one, with the piercings creating variety in values. Eventually, they will grow up and look like these from the One Day series.

These are from the same kiln firing as the previous post. After collecting the plants, I dipped them in slip. For this firing, I stained some with cobalt and some with iron.

Opening up the kiln, after a firing, is like Christmas. You’re never quite sure what you’ll find inside. This firing was like super Christmas! These objects are unglazed clay; the different colors are a result of the different types of clay.
